How to Choose One or Two Social Media Channels

Pick social channels based on your customers, the kind of work you do, and the time you can devote to maintaining them.

The best channel is one your customers use and your business can update consistently. A focused presence with clear information is often more useful than several neglected profiles.

Find out where customers look

Ask recent customers how they heard about you and where they look for recommendations. Consider how they choose a provider: a visual portfolio, local recommendations, professional expertise, or timely updates may each point toward different channels. Use what you hear as a starting point, then observe which channels generate relevant visits and conversations.

Match the channel to your material

A business with strong project photos may find visual platforms practical. A consultant may prefer a professional network where useful explanations and experience are easy to share. A neighborhood business may get more value from a complete local profile and community updates. These are starting hypotheses, not guarantees about where every customer will be.

Check the time and response needs

Each active account needs accurate hours and contact details, fresh information, and someone to respond to reasonable questions. Before choosing a channel, decide who will create posts, check messages, and handle comments. If you cannot support two channels, begin with one and keep your website and local listings current.

Test with a clear purpose

For a few weeks, share useful material on the selected channel and record meaningful actions such as calls, quote requests, appointments, or questions. Do not judge solely by likes or follower totals. Keep the channel if it helps customers take a relevant next step and the workload is sustainable.

Key points

  • Ask customers where they discover and evaluate businesses.
  • Choose channels that fit both your work and the material you can create.
  • Account for the time needed to maintain profiles and answer messages.
  • Review relevant inquiries, not just follower counts.
